EXCHANGE

Exchange ... Fat  for Muscle? Yes, you can,  and it's FINALLY HERE!





Obviously there are few individuals on this planet that would say no to the  opportunity to exchange fat for muscle. Enhancing the body's ability to utilize  fat stores as a source of calories usually means a decreased diet that reduces  calorie intake to a point where less calories are ingested than the body burns  daily.  Unfortunately, with this low calorie environment comes a "catabolic  environment" in which needed daily calories also come from the breaking down of  lean tissue (like muscle and connective tissue). What if it was possible to use  fat stores as a source of calories without losing lean tissue during low calorie  dieting? Now, imagine a magic pill that allowed you to use fat calories to build  and repair lean tissue without a reduced caloric intake?

It's Been  Done Already?
In an interesting study performed at The  University of Iowa on mice (1), researchers found that a natural compound found  in the waxy coating of apple peels had beneficial effects upon body composition.  According to Dr. Christopher Adams and colleagues, the benefits appear to be due  to the administration of the apple peel compound known as ursolic acid. The  project started when Adams and colleagues researched and identified 63 genes  that change in response to fasting. These genes are the same in both people  and mice. Then the team quantified an additional 29 genes that change their  expression in muscles tissue of people who are fasting and those with spinal  cord injuries. Next step is obvious, the team of researchers evaluated over  1,300 small molecules eventually zeroing in on ursolic acid as a compound that  might counteract muscle atrophy (muscle wasting).

Dr. Adam's and colleague's research findings  showed: The study showed that effects of ursolic  acid on muscle in normal mice were accompanied by reductions in their body fat,  fasting blood glucose, cholesterol and fats called triglycerides. 

Ursolic acid inhibited muscle atrophy in fasting mice. However,  without ursolic acid, fasting in mice reduced muscle weight by 9%. Providing  fasting mice with dietary ursolic acid increased their muscle weight by 7%.  Metformin had no effect on muscle atrophy in fasting mice. 

Ursolic acid also induced muscle growth  (hypertrophy) in normal mice. Mice on a diet containing ursolic acid had larger  skeletal muscles and skeletal muscle fibers and increased grip strength compared  to those on a normal diet.

The problem with Ursolic acid is that it is LESS than 1% bio-available! ALRI fixed  that!

When I first saw this product on the web, I was intrigued. High Protein bread? Seriously? My mouth started to water a little bit thinking of all the really healthy sandwiches I could make. Bobs Red Mill Oats!

There are so many great things I can say about Bobs Red Mill. Simply the best I've ever tried. From their customer service to the product itself to packaging they do things right! I was very impressed with everything, the product was steel cut oats and I fell in love with them!

I've always used 1 minute or old fashioned oats but steel cut is much better for us. They digest a tad slower as well which offers a steady flow of energy to our bodies. Steel-cut oats are a kind of whole grain which offers a range of potential health benefits. Unlike rolled oats, steel-cut oats are made by taking the groat --- the center of the oat's kernel --- and cutting it into several pieces with a steel blade. Because this type of oats is not significantly processed, it retains a favorable nutritional profile.

Low in Fat

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Nutrient Database calculates that oats are approximately 93 percent fat-free. Oats contain only a small amount of fat, and this is mostly unsaturated fat instead of solid, or saturated, fat. According to the MedlinePlus online medical resource, it's better to consume unsaturated fat than saturated fat. Saturated fat can contribute to the development of clogged arteries, cardiovascular problems and heart disease. In moderation, unsaturated fat is considered beneficial to health.

Protein

Oats are an excellent source of non-meat protein, and make a good protein option if you are following a vegetarian or vegan diet. A 100-gram serving of oats contains 16.9 g of protein, which is roughly a third of a healthy adults daily protein requirement. According to the Dietary Fiber Food website, an adult female requires roughly 46 g of protein daily; the daily requirement for a male is 56g. Pregnant or lactating women have a much higher protein requirement, needing over 70 g per day.

Fiber

By weight, steel-cut oats are typically about 10 percent fiber, providing just over 10 g in every 100-g serving of oats, the USDA database notes. Fiber is essential for healthy functioning of the human gut, and sufficient consumption of fiber may lower your risk of heart disease and diabetes, the Mayo Clinic reports. Fiber in the diet may also prevent or relieve symptoms of constipation. You body cannot digest fiber, but it plays an important part in maintaining a healthy digestive system.

Vitamins and Minerals

Steel-cut oats are not processed in the same way as commercial breakfast cereals or prepared foods --- meaning vitamins and minerals that support healthy functioning of your body are not removed by processing. The minerals calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, sodium, zinc, manganese and copper are present in steel-cut oats, the USDA reports. Steel-cut oats also contain small amounts of folate, niacin, riboflavin, thiamin and vitamin B-6.



Basic Cooking Instructions for Steel Cut Oats

•1 cup Steel Cut Oats
•1/4 tsp Salt (I didn't add salt)
•3 cups Water

Directions:
Bring water and salt to a boil. Add oats, reduce heat, and cook 10-20 minutes (depending on how chewy you like your cereal). Stir occasionally. Cover and remove from heat and let stand a few minutes. Makes 3 cups of cereal.

A big thank you to Magnum Nutraceuticals for sending me a tub of their OPUS pre workout supplement. I have to say that this product is pretty darn good. I really surprised me with the amount of energy it gave. Mental focus and drive were top notch. The energy flowed at a steady consistent rate rate with no crash, no jitters and no bad sides at all. On a scale of 1-10 (10 being best) I have to give this prouct a 9! The only downside, for me, was the flavoring. It wasnt horrible but I didnt really like it.
